Chronic pain and physical health issues

My therapeutic approach is integrative, working somatically with the body as well as with cognition (the mind). This helps me to help you (w)holistically whether you are experiencing mental, emotional or physical discomfort.

We are an interconnected organism. Our thoughts and emotions have an effect on our body in the same way that our physical body can impact our mental state; for example, exercise (physical) can make you feel good (mental state).

Research shows that negative emotional states impact our physical state as well as recovery time. Our emotional state impacts our physical well being in ways we may not be aware of. For example,

  • Anxiety, worry, fear from a diagnosis received
  • Anxiety before surgery or medical procedures
  • Worry about healing after surgery
  • Frustration with pain, discomfort, limited range of motion from a recent, acute injury
  • Trauma from an injury or accident
  • Worry or fear about pregnancy and childbirth, either as a new experience or after a distressing past experience. Disconnection from newborn, postpartum depression.
  • Overwhelm, frustration, sadness or worry from dealing with chronic health issues like psoriasis, tinnitus, IBS, asthma, joint pain and the like
  • Caregiver fatigue, often overlooked; a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion from caring for a patient over time

As Dr. Gabor Maté says, “The physiology of one individual cannot be separated from the psychological and social environment.”

In a study looking at around 600 people who had gastroenteritis caused by a bacterium, researchers found that the patient’s ability to handle stress before the infection was a pivotal factor in whether they went on to develop IBS. Those with higher levels of perceived stress, anxiety, and negative illness beliefs at the time of infection were more prone to develop IBS after a bout of gastroenteritis.

META-Health shoulder painHealing can be impeded by stress, anxiety, unconscious negative thought patterns, negative beliefs and stressful environments as much as by habits and lifestyle choices.

Our bodies are auto-regulating systems that are designed to heal naturally. If you cut your finger, the cut heals automatically – unless it is prevented from healing in some way. So why is it that some symptoms simply don’t seem to resolve?

All of the above is also true for recent, acute physical injuries (for example, a fracture, sprain or muscle injury). The body may heal faster when any emotional and mental residue from the time of injury is recognised and released. This could include fear or even embarrassment experienced at the time of injury, negative thoughts after the injury, something seen, heard or felt, any limiting beliefs about the injury or recovery, or worry or anxiety from receiving a diagnosis.

META-Health is the science of body-mind-social health with a focus on how specific stress triggers, emotions, beliefs and lifestyle choices affect physical health. It is about the interconnectedness of the body, mind and social environment. To be META-Healthy means to be aware of your body’s intelligence, taking conscious actions for self-healing and personal growth.

Why Counselling?

Life comes with ups as well as downs for all of us, and while we are usually good at processing the happiness and joys of life, we sometimes have trouble dealing with the downs. Talking with friends and family is helpful, and yet many differing opinions or expectations from those closest to us may lead to confusion and additional stress.

Our current society and culture seems to propagate the belief that we should be able to cope with everything, that we should be strong and do it on our own. And if we find we are unable then we simply look for the pill or quick fix to sort it out for us. Counselling offers the possibility of a more sustained sense of wellbeing.

When we choose exploration of self it opens us up vs. a shutting us down; we can start to identify the causes of current concerns, notice factors that perpetuate problems, and become aware of fears and beliefs that limit our emotional freedom. An understanding and working through of our difficulties, anxiousness, or moodiness enables a falling away of old patterns.

Counselling offers a safe and confidential space for you to voice your concerns and difficulties while being heard. A space in which you can reflect on what you might wish to change to live a more meaningful and fulfilled life. To set goals and practice healthier ways of being, as you feel supported to move beyond past patterns of limiting thoughts, perspectives and attitudes. A counsellor is supportive and non-judgemental, someone who strives to understand thoughts and feelings from your point of view.

People seek counselling for a wide variety of reasons:

  • Relationship difficulties
  • Stressful or distressing experiences which need to be shared in a safe environment. These may include relocation to a new city, separation or divorce, loss of a loved one, an accident, or even witnessing something traumatic that is difficult to recover from.
  • A desire to change certain behaviours, like food cravings or addictions, excessive anger, overwhelming or uncontrollable thoughts, or certain social behaviours.
  • Support through a serious illness.
  • Experiencing low moods, anxious feelings or both.
  • Feeling uncertain about a change in life path/career.
  • Personal crisis, because life does not always flow in the way we want it to, and we may not have the resources to cope with unexpected events.
  • Wanting to succeed and experiencing an inability to achieve goals.
  • Counselling also serves as a guide for personal development, to expand awareness and grow into one’s full potential, and can be beneficial for anyone.
